The local take
The Douro River divides the old center from Vila Nova de Gaia, and the city runs west to the Atlantic at Foz do Douro, so river cruises, seaside boardwalks and sunset viewpoints come up often. Day trips matter just as much: wine country upriver, Roman and Baroque towns to the north, canal towns and surf beaches to the south, and old stone villages inland. In town, expect gilded churches, small house museums, photography and music venues, and green spaces that range from hilltop gardens to a birdwatching estuary.
Late spring and early summer bring saints' festivals with fireworks, grilled sardines and music in the streets. Every pick comes with a note from the local guide who recommends it, and the chips narrow the list to parks, museums, hikes or day trips.
