The local take
Museums lead the list and cover a lot of ground: Italian painting, nineteenth-century collectors' homes, modern art in a neoclassical villa, fashion and design, even science and engineering. Brera and Porta Venezia add historic gardens, antique stalls and neighborhood markets, while the Navigli district holds flea markets along the water. The newer city shows up too, with parks planted among glass towers, outdoor concerts and soccer matches at the stadium.
For a break from the streets, the northern lakes and a medieval hilltop city make easy day trips. Our local guides chose each place and wrote a note on why it's worth your time; use the chips to filter by museums, markets, parks or day trips.
