"The grand entrance to the Acropolis, Propylea is a marvel of classical architecture. As I walk through, I often reflect on how it must have felt to approach the sacred rock of Athens in ancient times."

Since its beginnings, the Propylaea has always acted as the main gate into the interiors of the Acropolis. Yet its grandeur makes visitors believe it must be another one of the monumental temples. Constructed between 437 and 432 BCE, it’s located at the western entrance of the ancient citadel. A staircase leads you here. Admire its variation of both Doric and Ionic columns, as well as its Pentelic marble design. The original has influenced various architectural styles including Byzantine, Roman, and Neoclassical design.
