Alfama, Lisbon

"Go to experience the emotions and history of fado—from its origins in Lisbon’s old neighborhoods to its international recognition and ongoing evolution today."
Fado music is an integral part of Portuguese culture, and there’s no better place to learn more about it than at the Fado Museum in Alfama. Fado started in the early 19th century and has impacted Portuguese radio, cinema, and television. You can hear this soulful, longing music all over Lisbon, but the museum has posters, paintings, photos, guitars, and other artifacts that divulge its history.
