The local take
The city wears its layers openly: Roman mosaics, Moorish and Mudéjar courtyards, Gothic and Baroque churches, and private collections of Andalusian painting. Across the river, Isla de la Cartuja leans toward contemporary art and indie music festivals. Music fills the calendar, from flamenco to early music in old churches and big summer concerts outdoors, and Holy Week brings processions through the neighborhoods.
Day trips are easy too: Roman ruins just outside the city, hilltop towns with Moorish fortresses, whitewashed mountain villages, the wetlands to the southwest, sherry country and the Atlantic coast. Each listing includes tips from the licensed local guide who chose it, and the chips jump to museums, landmarks, live events or day trips.
