"This is my favorite building in town—an outstanding example of 17th-century architecture. It houses over 80 million documents related to the Spanish overseas possessions from the 15th to the 19th centuries."

Built during Philip II's reign, the General Archive of the Indies is one of the world's grandest document centers and home to over 80 million documents spanning the 15th to 19th centuries. Noteworthy items include an account book of Luis de Santángel — one of Christopher Columbus's financiers — and the documents that Columbus consulted on his voyage. The archive is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
