The local take
Stand-up bars serve bifanas and steak sandwiches with a cold beer, seafood halls do crab and clams, and petiscos, Portugal's small plates, are made for sharing over vinho verde. Chiado and Bairro Alto hold many of the chef-driven restaurants, with modern takes on Portuguese classics and terraces overlooking the river, while quieter neighborhoods outside the center keep prices local.
Cafés and bakeries round things out with coffee and custard tarts. Our local guides wrote a note for every spot, and the chips sort the list into tascas, petiscos, casual meals and fine dining.
