The Jerónimos Monastery in Belém is one of the most important and recognizable monuments in Lisbon and the entire country. This UNESCO World Heritage Site began construction in 1501 but wasn’t finished until the 16th century. Today, it’s regarded as a masterpiece of Portuguese architecture for its unique style. The monastery is the resting place of the explorer Vasco de Gama, and the famous poet Fernando Pessoa rests in the abbey.
