According to the mythical tale of Atlantis, Poseidon (the ancient Greek god of the sea) was the first king of the legendary island. Along the Athens Riviera (the southern coast of Attica) at Cape Sounio stands the remains of the glorified Temple of Poseidon. Boasting mesmerizing vistas of the Aegean Sea and striking architecture, this temple dates from 444 to 440 BCE. Not only was the temple an ode to Poseidon but it was built in honor of King Aegeus of Athens. It’s a 1.5-hour drive from the city.
