What was once a dream of figures like Periander (Tyrant of Corinth) and Julius Caesar finally came to fruition thanks to modern technology circa 1893, forming what is today called the Corinth Canal. The man-made waterway connects the Aegean Sea with the Gulf of Corinth. Surrounding it is the area of Ancient Corinth, where multiple ancient ruins lie such as the Temple of Apollo, the Bema of Saint Paul, and the mythical Peirene Fountain. The modern Corinth city is five kilometers from the archaeological site, and Corinth is just over a one-hour drive from Athens.
