Paris Local

Located in a historic square where a medieval fortress and prison built by King Charles V once stood, Place de la Bastille is a tribute to the French Revolution. An uprising due to a disparity in wealth and fundamental resources destroyed the former Bastille. The 171-foot bronze monument, Colonne de Juillet, was opened to the public in 1840. It symbolizes the events that took place here that sparked the French Revolution.
