With its more barren, desolate terrain compared to other parts of Tuscany, Crete Senesi is known for its lunar-like landscapes: a formation of clay hills and drier soils that give off a grey/brownish color. This region is particularly renowned for its production of olive oil (olive trees thrive in dry soil). The area feels very widespread, with villages dotted in between as opposed to more built-up cities. Popular ones to visit include Asciano, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme, Buonconvento, Trequanda, and San Giovanni d'Asso.
