Siena, Florence & Countryside

"Founded in the 14th century in the Crete Senesi, renowned for its fresco cycle of the Life of Saint Benedict, largely by Il Sodoma. One of the most important artistic and spiritual centers of the Olivetan Benedictines."
Between low-hanging clouds (especially in the cooler months) and thickets of cypress trees lies the stunning Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore. This ancient monastery (established in the 14th century) is absolutely massive, deeming it an impressive example of Gothic architecture. Entering inside, though, there are also Baroque elements, introduced later on. The abbey honors the life of Saint Benedict, and there are plenty of incredible artworks decorating the walls within, particularly the frescoes in the Great Cloister.
