"This monumental gateway symbolizes the division between ancient Athens and the Roman expansion of the city. Every time I pass through, I’m reminded of its rich history, where the ancient and the Roman worlds meet."

If you’re exploring the most important sites of Ancient Greece on foot, start at the symbolic Hadrian’s Arch (resembling the Roman Empire’s conquering of Greece in the 2nd century). From here, you’ll pass by the Temple of Olympian Zeus on your way to the Panathenaic Stadium, totaling a 15-minute walk. Founded in 131 CE, the archway marked the gateway between the new Roman city and the old part of Athens city, so it’s said to be the marker between two worlds.
