The biggest and most famous square in Lisbon faces the harbor. It was once the reception point for important guests arriving in the city by sea in centuries past. A royal palace stood in the western part of the square, but it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. Today, you’ll find many statues and reliefs of Portuguese historical figures and the historic Martinho da Arcada, the oldest café in Lisbon.
