The Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens was built between 1842 and 1862 and holds mass every Sunday morning. During the week, it’s open up to visitors who wish to sightsee its emblematic interiors or light a candle. Considered a pilgrimage site, two tombs of saints are housed inside the cathedral (Patriarch Gregory V and Saint Philothei). Sitting in Mitropoleos Square, it’s seven minutes from Syntagma Square and ten minutes walking time to the National Garden.
