Forte de São João Baptista

This fortress in Foz do Douro was built in the 16th century to protect Porto from attacks from pirates and enemies. Locals call it the “Cheese Castle” because of its shape and appearance. The design came from an Italian architect whose vision is now regarded as the first example of Renaissance architecture in northern Portugal. In the 19th century, the fortress became a political prison but is now a designated Monument of Public Interest.
