Did you know that Florence celebrates its own unofficial New Year, known as the Florentine New Year? This celebration on March 25 traces back to the Middle Ages and used to be the marking of the start of the city’s civil calendar. Every year on this day — now a public holiday — Florence is alive with festivities centered around its traditions. Men, women, and children dressed in medieval costumes march the streets, starting from Palagio di Parte Guelfa, as part of the historical procession. Multiple concerts and plays are held, as well as a fireworks display.
