The Valley of Cuelgamuros is a controversial monument in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, accessible by car or public transportation from Madrid. It was founded by the dictator Francisco Franco to commemorate his victory in the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939. It took 19 years to complete and was built using forced labor by political prisoners. The monument is a solemn place with 33,847 graves, 12,000 of which are still unidentified.
