On the last Saturday of July, Tokyo residents gather at the Sumida River to participate in a celebration dating back to the Edo Period: the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival. In fact, it's the world's oldest known fireworks festival. Large crowds gather for summer fun, lots of food and drink, and to watch bright colors fill the sky over the river. You can see the fireworks from several points in Asakusa, but expect big crowds.
