Florence & Countryside Local

This is a Florentine tradition that takes place each Easter Sunday. Its roots date back to the year 1099, though the story is a mix of history and legend. In front of the Duomo, at around 10 a.m., a priest rubs flints together to spark a fire and light the Easter candle and coals that are placed on a cart called il brindellone. Costumed drummers and flags accompany the cart until 11 a.m. when fireworks explode from it. Be sure to get there early!
