"One of the most iconic landmarks in Athens, the Panathenaic Stadium is where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896. I’ve run the Athens marathon twice, and there’s nothing like crossing the finish line in this all-marble stadium."

Introducing the grounds that started the beginning of what we now call the Olympic Games, the colossal Panathenaic Stadium! Built in 330 BCE, its original purpose was to host the Panathenaic Games in honor of the goddess Athena. Left abandoned in the early times of the Common Era, it was excavated in 1869. For the first-ever modern Olympic Games in 1896, this stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. Audio tours are included with tickets, and the Stadium frequently hosts events, including superstar concerts, from The Cure to Black Eyed Peas.
