Built in 1389 and refurbished in the 18th century, Carmo Archaeological Museum is housed inside the Gothic-style Carmo Church in Chiado. It was founded in 1864 as Portugal’s first museum of art and archaeology, and it currently displays more than 1,000 artifacts in its permanent collection. These pieces dive into centuries of Portuguese history and culture, including tombs, medals, tiles, and even mummies.
