With a rather wild and rugged feel, the waters that flow into the Los Bermejales Reservoir come down from the surrounding Sierra de Almijara mountains. The man-made water body was created in 1958, and its size is 300 km2. Since its inception, wildlife around the lake has increased, especially bird species. Apart from birdwatching, visitors are allowed to swim within the lake, and activities like SUPing and canoeing are popular. The closest town is tiny Arenas del Rey – one hour from Granada.
