6th arrondissement, Paris

"Standing-room-only with small plates and communal slabs of butter to cut yourself. Crowded, convivial, and unlike any typical French bistro."
Forget about sitting down, what sets the bustling L’avant comptoir du marché apart from your average French restaurant is that most meals and dishes are served and eaten whilst standing. It’s a whole experience. They even take away the stools come nightfall to make extra space for more people. With close to 70 small plates to choose from, it’s very much like a Spanish taperia — but oh-so-French. Huge portions of butter mound the bar, which patrons are free to serve themselves. Just like the wide food selection, a glass cabinet is lined with hundreds of bottles of wine to choose from.
