Cartuja, Granada

"Marvel at the exuberant Andalusian Baroque in La Cartuja, where every chapel dazzles with intricate decoration and light. This former Carthusian monastery is a true feast for the senses and a hidden gem of Granada."
A ten-minute drive from Capilla Real is La Cartuja, i.e., the Granada Charterhouse (founded in 1514). Its combination of various architectural styles added over the centuries makes it a standout building. The golden Baroque tabernacle with its over-stylized and exaggerated sculptures, paintings, and adornments…The light marble sacristy…The 17th-century cloister…The Neoclassical facade, built in the 18th century. Yet it somehow all seamlessly blends. Many frescoes and other artworks await visitors. From the outside, one could never imagine such an elaborate design inside.
