"Kerameikos, an ancient cemetery, offers insight into the daily life and funerary practices of ancient Athens. It’s one of those places that feels sacred and makes me reflect on Athenians’ views on death."

Athens Local

It’s hard to believe that Kerameikos ancient cemetery was once home to a community of potters. In fact, the word ‘’kerameikos’ translates to ‘potters.’ However, this all changed when the area was converted into burial grounds, utilized up until the 6th century CE. During archaeological site excavations in 1870, thousands of tombs were discovered, as well as Athenian vases. Relive all this history walking around Kerameikos. Then, explore the relics at the Archaeological Museum of Kerameikos next door.
