Xochimilco, Mexico City

"Where colorful trajineras (traditional boats) glide gracefully to the sounds of traditional music. "
The floating gardens (chinampas) of Xochimilco showcase an ingenious Aztec agricultural system south of Mexico City. These artificial islands, built from layered mud and vegetation, rise from a network of canals. As visitors drift on colorful trajineras (gondola-like boats), local vendors and mariachi bands float alongside, offering food and music. Still cultivated today, these fertile plots produce flowers and vegetables while preserving a UNESCO World Heritage site.
