"Built above San Galgano, around the sword in stone associated with Galgano Guidotti. According to tradition, Galgano thrust his sword into rock as renunciation of violence; Arthurian legend later reversed the gesture into a symbol of divine kingship."

If you’re a fan of myths and legendary tales, it’s believed that the real sword from the legend of Excalibur is rooted in this very site, i.e., Eremo di Montesiepi. Whilst you probably know the story of King Arthur, it was actually Saint Galgano who held the sword. It’s said that the legend is based on this. Today, you can still see the sword in stone, which is really cool! The shrine is a 10-minute walk from Abbazia di San Galgano.
