Portazgo, Madrid

"Started in 1981, when a group of men began battling the summer heat by using public fountains. This fun tradition has grown into one of the most important events in our neighborhood. People come with water guns, and firefighters join in."
Madrileños look forward to a break from the summer heat during the Batalla Naval de Vallecas. It takes place in Vallecas during the Virgen del Carmen festival in the second and third weeks of July. Neighbors use buckets, water guns, and other fun ways to soak each other during this water battle. It’s family-friendly and open to all who wish to join the battle.
